Hi. My name is Sean Galla. I am a facilitator of support groups and support forums for men, with over 10 years of experience. In my work, I have seen firsthand how important being part of a support group is to anyone’s well-being, especially men.

An in-person or online support group is a fantastic place for anyone to get the emotional support and push they need to become a better person and adopt habits and mechanisms to help them advance in their career, personal life, and even financial life. It is also an ideal place to make male friends amongst people with a shared love for self-improvement.

This article will find all the information you need about male peer support groups and why being part of such a group is a highly recommended form of online therapy for any man interested in personal growth.

While the discussions around issues related to mental health and male vulnerability have become less taboo, in 2023, men are still finding it hard to be vulnerable, even with their closest friends or loved ones.

Their relational inability to meet the needs of their spouses emotionally often strains relationships, which has seen more and more men get older, single, or alone. More and more colleges are experiencing record-high drops in the number of male enrollments and higher numbers of male dropouts.

That is not all; men lead in suicide numbers in the USA. More men are struggling with drug addiction and substance abuse than women, as well as mental illness, and how things got this bad is still a matter of public debate. What is certain, however, is the increasing number of men living in isolation.

When growing up, men are taught that the true measure of a man is their ability to remain stoic and show no emotion. For generations, this negative perspective about masculinity has made it hard for men to nurture their emotional side since it fosters ignoring the existence of male emotions altogether. For a long time, most men have navigated life with no emotional literacy or intelligence, an essential trait for everyday life.

With better education and understanding of mental wellness, men have realised the importance of emotional awareness and have started taking steps towards seeking social support, learning about their emotional needs and that emotional vulnerability is not a sign of weakness.

Despite this knowledge, men still find it hard to open up to their peers, friends, or loved ones. The need for emotional openness and lack of safe spaces for expression has brought rise to male support groups.

What is a male support group?

Ideally, a male support group is a group of men meeting regularly in a group setting to share what is happening in their lives as they receive guidance on navigating their situations best. Also referred to as as a therapy group. It does not have to involve a lot of people, just about 10 to 25 men per support network is ideal.

A male support group’s purpose is to help the members become better men in a safe place. The group meetings can take place locally, online, and over weekend retreats.

Whether virtual, through messaging, or face-to-face, male talking groups online can be equally effective.

How male support groups work

Different male support groups like the mankind project or MensGroup have different working mechanisms for intervention for men’s issues. Meetups can be held bi-weekly or monthly with a facilitator leading a typical group meeting.

The facilitator’s work is to maintain order in the group and ensure that everyone will have the opportunity to talk while encouraging conversation to keep a steady flow. The facilitator is also tasked with making everyone feel as comfortable as possible.

One at a time, each man will update the group on their lives and then support each other – offering feedback and perspective – on whatever issues or opportunities the guys may face.

Often, men attend male support groups to talk about things that they are not comfortable discussing with others in their lives. They might feel that the issues may burden their partner or best friend or aren’t willing to share since they think the issue may be embarrassing. Male support groups are safe spaces for men to talk about anything and are 100% confidential.

If you are the shy type, not to worry. While support groups encourage sharing as part of participation, no one is obligated to speak until they are ready to share.

Guys joining men’s groups like the introvert support group for men vary in age, orientation, nationality, etc. At first, meeting with a group of young men in the same careers as you or who watch the same football team might feel more comfortable. However, having a more diverse group of guys will help you see different sides to issues you may be facing and will help you grow more. Most men’s groups encourage diversity.

Why are male support groups important?

It is a space where men challenge each other in a healthy way.

Having people always agree with you is not the most beneficial way to live. In a men’s support group, you will meet like-minded men willing to correct you and challenge you to improve while offering all the support and tools you need to do so.

With various topics in men’s support groups, it can be helpful to know the absolute truth, even if it’s uncomfortable. In a men’s group, the challenge can be healthy!

They are an open space to learn from fellow men

In a male support group, men come together to discuss the pressures they face while navigating masculinity. This gives them a community that fosters a sense of belonging, reducing isolation and helping to eradicate toxic masculinity.

A man in your support group might share about a certain situation that they went through and what they learned from it. From their experience, you can learn how to navigate your situations and what pitfalls to avoid. Being part of a male support group can help you grow, help motivate you, and help you connect with people on a higher level.

You learn how to become a better listener

And it’s not just sharing our situations that lead to learning and growth. Active listening is essential in men’s groups. By listening to others and their unique situations, you will find different perspectives and knowledge that will serve you for the rest of your life. It’s not just sharing our situations that lead to learning and growth.

They are non-judgmental spaces to share emotions

Why Are Male Support Groups Important?

One of the core reasons male support groups such as the first responder support group for men or addiction support groups for men exist is because, for a long time, men did not have safe spaces to express their feelings. In a male support group, men are allowed to be emotionally vulnerable in the presence of other men without feeling embarrassed.

By sharing your feelings and expressing your emotions to group members, you allow them to offer support and advice on the healthiest way to overcome negative emotions. This makes it easier for evryman to develop healthy coping strategies, which improves their emotional intelligence.

Male support groups offer a space for men to decompress

Life can often get complicated for men as they try to navigate their masculinity, handle personal relationships, and climb the corporate ladder. The pressure is worse if you feel that no one cares or understands.

In a male support forum, men are open to discussing anything, from financial to relationship issues. Nothing is off the table. With the advice given by other members, you can better understand the dynamics of your relationships with people and money without feeling judged or ridiculed for being vulnerable.

Male support groups are good for men’s mental health

Statistics show that men, compared to women. are less likely to seek professional help for mental health issues. A male support group provides a safe space for men to talk about mental health. In these groups, men can also find recommendations for mental health services and resources that can help them navigate different mental health issues.

In these groups, men learn of the importance of self-care and ways of improving their mental well-being.
