It is normal for humans to doubt their authenticity. Sometimes, life can force you to live inauthentically, forcing you to live a version you feel is not you. Over time, this can pose an issue for your mental well-being.
“Everyone has perjured themselves at least once in the attempt to maintain their good name.”
Living authentically allows you to embrace who you are. It will enable you to value your uniqueness as an individual. This way, you can navigate life to meet your personal expectations instead of external ones.
Most of our words and thoughts are influenced by others’ opinions. This highlights the importance and need to find your authentic self even amid external influences.
When you exist in inauthenticity, you feel like you are stepping on an unsolid ground with little support. This results in a sense of self-betrayal. The mind can sense inauthenticity.
“How would you detect your own inauthenticity? well Rogers had this idea that he called subception which was maybe something that you might regard as a sixth and that’s the perception that you have of your body as its reacting and localized in time and space. It’s your sense of how you’re reacting internally and where you are. A lot of that is observed by the autonomic nervous system which is reporting to you about various states of being in your body.”
You can use the information your body provides to determine when you are being inauthentic. Once you are able to detect when you are being inauthentic, you can make changes to live more authentically.
This can be achieved by controlling your thoughts and ensuring that your belief system is not only influenced by others around you but also by your ideas and issues you strongly believe in.
Knowing when you are being inauthentic is the best way to ensure you live authentically.
